Concessionary Fares – Shakespeare Express
The Friends of Vintage Trains members benefit from concessionary fares for Standard Class travel on the summer Sunday Shakespeare Express steam-hauled service to and from Stratford-upon-Avon and can use these benefits as many times as they like. There are no concessions for Premier Dining Class travel. The following concessions are offered to members of the Friends:
- Members who can produce a current Friends of Vintage Trains membership card can purchase a Standard Class return ticket for the price of a single ticket.
- Partner members (Husband & Wife) – the benefit is available to both individuals included in the “Partner” membership.
- Family members (2 Adults & 2 Children) – the benefit is available to all members of the “Family” membership.
Members may use this concession to buy tickets for their own travel on the Shakespeare Express as many times as they want. Each return journey needs a separate ticket. The tickets purchased at the members discounted fare must be for the members’ own use and proof of membership will be required when purchasing them and on the trains.
This concession applies only to the regular summer Sunday daytime service trains running between July & September and when celebrity engines are not being used. Where additional special ‘out of season’ Shakespeare Express trains or evening trains are run and/or celebrity engines are being used, then member concessions will not usually be available. Members are asked to look out for special train notices which may show whether the concession will apply. Unfortunately we are unable to offer concessions for The Friends of Vintage Trains members on the one-off Vintage Trains tours.
Tyseley Locomotive Works Open Days – Concessionary Admission
Concessionary admission tickets are usually available for most Tyseley Locomotive Works Open Days to The Friends of Vintage Trains members holding a current valid membership card which must be produced when purchasing an Open Day ticket.
The Open Days offer a range of attractions alongside access to the Tyseley site; for example the Summer 2019 Open Day offered free rides on the visiting Rocket replica train.
Steam in Trust subscription
Steam in Trust is a high quality magazine which is published 3 times a year by the Friends of Vintage Trains and circulated free of charge to all members of the Friends. It carries a wide range of articles, including the latest news of developments in Vintage Trains and the Tyseley Locomotive works, updates on the activities of the Friends including the Annual General Meeting and social events, contributions by members of the Friends and volunteers and much more.
PDF copies of Steam in Trust are available on the publications page approximately one month after printed copies are circulated to members of the Friends. The on-line version cannot do justice to the quality of the printed publication, which is circulated to all members of the Friends.
A range of social events are offered to members of the Friends and a guest free of charge.
The Friends of Vintage Trains held its first social evening on Thursday, 12 September 2019. We were delighted that Bob Meanley, who had recently stepped down as managing director of Tyseley Locomotive Works after 20 years in the role, had agreed to give a talk entitled Looking Back. Les Ross, who is well-known for his time at BRMB, joined us for the evening and was in discussion with Bob after Bob’s talk – audience involvement was encouraged. A finger buffet was included in the evening.
Due to the current Covid 19 restrictions the social that was planned for 14 May 2020 has been postponed. We are still hoping to hold the one planned for 8 August 2020, and will update this page when the current restrictions are eased. Any suggestions for future events are welcome; please use the Contact Us form with any suggestions.
